  • Redesigning our consumer habits | Kyle Parsons | TEDxUbud

Trash is not a “THEY” problem, it is a “WE” problem. Did you know we humans produce more than 2.6 trillion pounds of trash a year? That’s the weight of about 7,000 skyscrapers. How can we stop this? Being aware of who made your product in the supply chain is the key to conscious consumerism. Kyle Parsons makes a living from your trash, in particular, your old tires. His concern for the waste disposal challenges in Bali, an island he visited and became enamored with during a surf trip in 2004 led him to eventually found Indosole, a company that repurposes Indonesia's end-of-life tires into soles for footwear. Sadly, more than one billion waste tires end up in landfills worldwide and in tropical islands like Bali, it can become breeding grounds for mosquitos, which the leads to the ...

Senator Barack Obama responds to a question from vegan, Nikki Benoit, during a public meeting at Gibbs High School, Saint Petersburg, Florida (August 1st, 2008) The transcript of the conversation between Nikki and now president-elect Obama appears below... Senator Barack Obama: The young lady in the t-shirt, right there. Nikki Benoit: Thank you, Senator, very much for your strong environmental position. The United Nations actually has reiterated that factory farming is contributing more to global greenhouse gas emissions than all of transportation. I think that as a global community we really need to be the leader and moving more towards non-factory farming animal agriculture. It's very egregious. There's 10 billion land animals that we are funnelling our precious water and grain through when 70 per cent of all of our grain could help feed the world's hungry. So, as the next leader of the most amazing nation in the world, how can we set the example on the more nutritional, plant-based diet that's more eco-friendly and sustainable, that can maintain our water resources and all of our grain. Thank you very much. Senator Barack Obama: Okay. Well, it's a great question. Now, I have to say in the interests of full disclosure, that I do like a steak once in a while. I'm just being honest. I like barbecue. I'm not going to lie. But the young lady makes a very important point and that is this: right now, our food system world-wide is under enormous pressure. It's under enormous pressure because as a consequence of climate change, you've had severe changes in weather patterns. We don't fully understand what these effects are. But, for example, Australia's had huge drought which has taken a lot of crops. Grain production has been much lower. And supplies are tight. You're starting to see riots around food in places like Haiti and other poor countries around the world. And what is also true is that as countries like China and India become wealthier, they start changing their food habits; they start eating more meat, more animals. And what happens then is because it takes more grain to produce a pound of beef than if they were just eating the grain, what ends up happening is that it puts huge pressure on food supplies. Americans would actually benefit from a change in diet. I don't think that that's something that we should legislate but I think that it is something that, as part of our overall health care system, we should encourage because, for example if we reduced obesity down to the rates that existed in 1980, we would save the medicare system a trillion dollars. We would reduce diabetes rates. We would reduce heart disease. So, the fact that we subsidise some of these big agribusiness operations that are not necessarily producing healthy food and we discourage, or we don't subsidise, farmers who are producing fruits and vegetables and small scale farming that gets produce immediately to consumers as opposed to having it processed. The fact that we are not doing more to make sure that healthy food is in the schools. All those things don't make sense. It is important for us to re-examine our overall food policy so that we're encouraging good habits and not bad habits. For example, just making sure there are more fruits and vegetables in school lunch programs. That would make an enormous difference in how our children's diets develop. That would make us healthier over the long term. It would cut our health care costs and maybe it would help people elsewhere in the world, who are in less wealthy countries, feed themselves as well. So, it's a great question. It's important. Actress and vegan animal rights activist, Pamela Anderson, presents the case for vegan meal options for 600,000 Los Angeles students. Pamela's excellent presentation (part of a Healthy Freedom campaign) was delivered at a board meeting of the Los Angeles Unified School District on June 14th 2016. Find out more about Healthy Freedom at https://www.facebook.com/earthpeacefoundation Full transcript: Hello. Good evening. Thank you for the opportunity to meet with you. As a mother it was important to me to be here because we are presented with a unique opportunity to help this generation of young people become more compassionate, be kinder to the environment and make healthier lifestyle choices. Kids today are appalled to learn that animals killed for cheese burgers and chicken nuggets live crowded by the thousands in dark, filthy sheds, are mutilated and are slaughtered by having their throats slit while they are still conscious. Violence and suffering is common in the industry but offering kids the chance to choose meals that are free of cruelty encourages compassion. Twelve per cent of millenials call themselves faithful vegetarians - up from four per cent of baby boomers - and another study showed that 45 per cent of younger consumers regularly eat vegan food and are looking for more options. Today's generation is growing up with considerable knowledge about the environment and how individual decisions can impact it. The average Californian uses 1500 gallons of water per day - nearly half of that can be attributed to meat and dairy products. It takes 477 gallons of water to produce a pound of eggs, 900 gallons to produce a pound of cheese, 1000 gallons to produce a pound of milk and 2500 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef. Animal agriculture is responsible for 80 per cent of US water usage. In addition, the United Nations says that raising animals for food is one of the top contributors to the most serious environmental problems. Giving 600,000 students the ability the make eco-friendly decisions every single day gives them the tools and the power to help reverse climate change, conserve water, prevent pollution and fight obesity. As a mother, I understand the challenge of trying to raise healthy kids when they are bombarded with appealing ads for junk foods. Putting great tasting nutritious foods in childrens' and teenagers' hands can set them up for a lifetime of positive choices. Thank you. They aren't very organized and put items in the FAQ non-vegan list long after they are released and stated as vegan. However, the lip products seem to be safe from this mess. They also offer returns/refunds when those issues occur. Just want to be 100% honest with you all and save you from having issues!)) I hope you enjoyed this beauty haul! Hello everyone and welcome to a new episode of veg-advice, where we will be addressing the veganism debate by going over the top 5 arguments against veganism part 2. The point of this video is to help anyone struggling to explain to people why veganism is healthy. I know how hard it is to explain your lifestyle to people, which is why I figured I would help you all and tell you what you should say during a veganism debate when people start stating the common arguments against veganism. If you haven't seen part 1 yet, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH9E3UrDQzE In this video, I will be addressing: 1. Plants have feelings too 2. We are at the top of the food chain 3. I only eat farm raised and humanely treated meat 4. I travel too much 5. If everyone goes vegan, then a lot of people will lose their job If you are looking for valid arguments against veganism, I must say, you won't find any. Being vegan is NOT about being right or wrong. So please, look at the facts first. Trolling is frowned upon :(. So if you have doubts, questions, disagreements, concerns, suggestions or anything else, please feel free to open a civil conversation that will stimulate learning! This video is in NO way, shape or form intended to offend anyone! Please know that this is my personality and I truly do love everyone. Just looking to express a bit of humor within such a serious topic. PLANTS HAVE FEELING TOO ARGUMENT DISCLAIMER: There is not enough evidence to back up this claim, however, trees have been found to communicate with each other and have complex systems we don’t fully understand. So yes, there are plants that can possibly feel pain, but these plants are not the ones that we eat. Such plants have evolved defense mechanisms against their predators. In regards to plants that we eat, they are meant to be eaten because that is how they expect to procreate. Fruits and veggies are attractive for this reason, so animals can eat them, poop out the seeds and a new tree will grow. One can say, these plants want to be eaten http://living-foods.com/ Cattle eating: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKnJWxRz6UM Veggies screaming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e4tE66gI_k Tiger roaring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXkGSc6d0xQ Pig doing puzzle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twS_COailzk What Would Happen if Humans Disappear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy7Q6wazD_E LABEL CONFUSION: HOW “HUMANE” AND “SUSTAINABLE” CLAIMS ON MEAT PACKAGES DECEIVE CONSUMERS http://awionline.org/sites/default/files/uploads/documents/foodlabel/AWI-FA-FoodLabelReport-05072014.pdf Perdue Farmer Reveals How Bad Life Is For His 'Humanely Raised' Chickens http://www.businessinsider.com/the-truth-about-humanely-raised-chicken-2014-12

Vegetarian and vegan lifestyles are currently en vogue in Switzerland. A diet without meat or even without any kind of animal source products may place consumers at risk for micronutrient deficiencies. The aim of the presented study was therefore, to investigate differences in both micronutrient intake and status between omnivores, vegetarians and vegans in Switzerland. A total of 206 healthy adults between the age of 18 and 50 years were recruited. Measures of weight and height were taken. Plasma concentration of the vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B6, B12, folic acid, pantothenic acid, niacin, biotin and ?-carotene as well as Fe, Mg, Zn and urinary iodine status was determined. Dietary intake was assessed using a 3-day weighed food record. Dietary intake of Ca, vitamin D and vitamin B12 was lowest in vegans. Despite those low intakes in vegans, vitamin B12 deficiency was very low in all groups. On the other hand, omnivores had lower intakes in Mg, vitamin C, vitamin E, niacin and folic acid. Consequently, the prevalence of folic acid deficiency was, with 58%, highest in this group. Despite higher Fe and Zn intakes in the vegan groups, their status of both minerals was lower compared to omnivores and Zn deficiency was more prevalent. All three diet forms have been shown to have advantages and disadvantages regarding micronutrient status. Nevertheless, we have been able to show that vegetarians and especially vegans seem to be well informed about the potential limitations of their diet and take the necessary precautions. ------------------ Aufgenommen beim VegMed 2014 -- http://www.vegmed.de

Sadly, more than one billion waste tires end up in landfills worldwide and in tropical islands like Bali, it can become breeding grounds for mosquitos, which the leads to the spread of malaria and dengue fever. Or they are burned for cheap fuel, leading to toxic oils and fumes. With 15 years experience in action sports and fashion retail (including brands Ray Ban and Bern) Kyle now runs Indosole out of San Francisco; however, the 100% organic manufacturing process takes place in Bali, staffed by professional Indonesian craftspeople. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
